The Island of Cozumel measures 48 km (30 miles) from north to south but only 16 (10 miles ) from east to west. On either side of the island, beaches form a long, white sandy coast. Gentle waves and transparent waters wash the western side of the island, while huge waves crash against the eastern side.
With a Mexican heart and a Caribbean soul, Cozumel is a paradise where tradition, flavor and joy come together. You will always find a friendly face and a warm welcome to make your stay an unforgettable one.
Famous all over the world for its coral reefs, there are plenty of water sports such as diving, deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, kayaking and more. Cozumel's mostly undeveloped territory at the center of the island is covered by jungle and swampy lagoons, which are home to tiny mammals and endemic birds that have never left the island. Noteworthy is the Chankanaab National Park, a Cozumel icon, and the Punta Sur Ecological Reserve. This huge protected area at the southern tip of the island includes Punta Celarain and its historical lighthouse, as well as the Colombia Lagoon, a shelter for many of the island's endemic species, as well as other endangered forms of life, such as marine turtles and their nesting areas.
With its beautiful beaches and exotic locale, Cozumel is an ideal destination where honeymooners can enjoy colorful and breathtaking sunsets, moonlit walks on secluded beaches, swim through crystal clear blue waters and romantic candlelight dinners. History The first Maya settled in Cozumel 2,000 years ago. However, during the classic period 300-900 A.C.- a time when priests were at the top of the social hierarchy in the Maya world and life revolved around religious ceremonies – Cozumel became one of the most important sanctuaries in the Yucatan region. Cozumel derives its name from the Mayan words Cuzam (swallow) and Lumil (land of), which form the word Cuzamil (land of swallows). The Mayan word changed with time to the Spanish name of Cozumel. The Mayans believed the island to be a sacred shrine. Geography On top of the age-old structures of the Mesoamerican Reef (also known by its Spanish acronym, SAM , Sistema Arrecifal Mesoamericano, is the largest reef system of the Americas, extending nearly 1000 kilometers) , stands the Island of Cozumel. Located at the Easter tip, of the Yucatán Peninsula, Cozumel was formed by coralline limestone rock and sandy soils, is the largest inhabited island in Mexico and Caribbean´s premier dive spot. (declared a national park in 1996). CultureIts inhabitants, perhaps its great on asset preserve their rich traditions, like Carnival, the religious rites of Easter week and the festivals of Santa Cruz in May, San Miguel in September. All of these popular events combine prehispanic and Catholic rituals with participation of locals and visitors alike. It is during these celebrations that local character and color can be most appreciated, when the identity and strength that the years and decades have given Cozumel make this beautiful island what is today, a place with deep historical roots and a broad vision for the future. Maya Heritage
Proud traditions link present to past. The island of Cozumel derives its name from the Mayan words Cuzam (swallow) and Lumil (land of), which join to form the word Cuzamil (land of swallows). Over time, the word Cuzamil evolved to the Spanish name of Cozumel. The Mayans believed the island to be a sacred shrine.

Cozumel Chrysalis Group
The Cozumel Chrysalis Group is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing financial scholastic support for the island's students. Cozumel Chrysalis Group began in 1995 with a few volunteers who provided financial assistance for less than a dozen elementary school students. Thanks to the generosity of locals and visitors. Cozumel Chrysalis has grown to support over 220 students annually. These students are enrolled in primary, secondary and high schools located all over the island. All of Mexican public school students must provide their own uniform, shoes and classroom supplies. Many families in Cozumel lack the financial ability to send their children to school. At times, children are forced to quit school to help support their families by working low paying jobs, with little hope of continuing their education and expanding their opportunities for better paying jobs. Our goal is to ensure children receive basic education essential to help them succeed in life by working in partnership with schools, local merchants and donors. No money changes hands between Cozumel Chrysalis Group and the students’ families. Packets of school supplies are provided directly to students at the beginning of the school year. Cozumel Chrysalis Group contracts with local merchants for discounted prices for uniforms and shoes. Merchants are paid directly by Cozumel Chrysalis Group. If special registration or exam fees are required, these are paid directly to the school. This process ensures that all assistance provided to sponsored students is used solely for the students’ educational needs. Cozumel Chrysalis Group members work on a strictly volunteer basis and receive no salary.
